Introduction

Video games are an increasingly emerging medium in today’s society. With rapid growth in technology, games are becoming more sophisticated and life-like. The space which video games occupy can be analysed in terms of player interaction and narrative. Studying game space is an alternative framework to explore movement through a video game. Different spatial types can be defined and distinguished. Focusing on the diegetic space, exploration within a game can be analysed. Rules and regulations of games can draw a player to perform certain actions but can also re-contextualise the space. Games, through their spaces, communicate narrative and emotion. A variety of video games and genres will be drawn upon as examples to illustrate key points.
