Conclusion

Spatial design is key to the success of video games. Diegetic, mediated spaces are representations of space and place projected onto a screen that distinguishes them from real unmediated space. Rules and regulations allow smooth movement through game space and help gamers progress. Communication occurs through the use of narrative, emotion and movement and is an important part of gameplay in order to immerse the player in the world of the game. Although designers are focused on game design, spaces create compelling narrative. Space enforces a narrative thus space and narrative can not be separated, as narrative is imbedded in the spatial nature of games. Emotion and meaning are conveyed through the use of “eye candy” and tense emotional sequences that invoke a sense of satisfaction in the gamer. Games incorporate techniques of spatial design, narrative, emotion and movement through spaces to create engaging and visually appealing games.
